MS DOS 7.1 ISO Download: How to Install and Run the Classic Operating System

Dear fellas, I'm sorry to revive such an old topic but I have a question. I watched a video about DOS 7.10 on YT and it said on the video that MS-DOS 7.1 is free and distributed under GMU GPL. Is it really so? If true, where can I download it?

I cannot seem to find much else on this DOS. I wonder if there are any legal concerns vis-a-vis Microsoft. And I wonder if this this download works as promised.Any insights are appreciated.-Lou

Actually, it seems to me upon typing that stuff out that ALL of that would probably be considered pirating by Microsoft. I guess they wouldn't bother going after the individual user at this point but they still might make a legal fuss over those files being posted on a popular website for all to download.

NOW I understand that means Win95B-Win98SE contain DOS 7.1. So I hunted for 7.1, found it on WinWorldpc.com (Abandoned Software) and downloaded "Microsoft DOS 7.1 (CD)>Version 7.1 (China DOS Union)>Size 8.09MB>Architecture x86>Contents CD-ROM ISO" .

I needed a Fractint fix, so I then did as Philip Yip suggested and downloaded/installed VMware Player and tried to install the DOS 7.1 ISO into it... no luck so far. So I then installed my Win98 CD into VMware... installed fine... and then installed Fractint into virtual Win98 by Drag-and-Drop. (Yes, I found VMware accepted DragNDrop whereas VirtualBox would not.) And finally enjoyed Fractint for a few hours.

You can now easily download MS-DOS for free. Experiencing the old versions of operating systems that can take you back to the time where all the OS were not supporting the GUI (Graphical User Interface). And each and everything was based on the command line.

You will need to remember that MS-DOS was available on the floppy disk. In case, if you are using a floppy disk, you might configure your booting sequence to floppy. However, if you have download MS-DOS then you will only need to create a CD or DVD bootable drive.

Setup instructions:1. Extract contents of archive to desktop2. Plug in your USB memory key3. Open James' Format Tool.exe4. Select your USB drive under "Device"5. Select FAT file system6. Type in a label for the drive7. Select "Format Device"8. Select "Create a DOS startup disk"9. Locate DOS files in the /DOS-on-USB/boot/ directory10. Be sure that you have removed all important files off of your USB key!11. Click "Start"12. After the format has completed sucessfully, copy all of \DOS-on-USB\ to the root directory of your USB Drive13. Hibernate or shut-down your computer14. Boot up your computer, with the USB drive plugged in.15. Enter your computer's BIOS (usually F1, F8, F12, DEL, or ESC)16. Navigate to the Boot Order section17. Bring USB to the top of the list, and save changes18. After a reboot, you will come to a DOS-style screen that will tell you that DOS-on-USB has loaded19. To continue installing DOS, press any key20. You should hopefully come to the DOS setup wizard21. Follow all prompts (click OK)22. When it asks for the location of setup files, type: C:\dos\DOS7123. Say YES to rewriting the MBR24. When asked for the install location, type: C:\dos7125. When asked what type of installation: select Full Installation, then deselect Addon Package26. Say YES to Access DOS27. Continue to install DOS 7.1, then reboot28. Unplug the USB Drive before it loads to enter Windows29. Plug in, and delete the \dos\ and \boot\ folders on your USB drive30. Complete! The license of this software is Freeware, you can free download and free use this system utility software.

I recently stumbled across my old copy of Datalight ROM-DOS 7.1 from back in the day when it was given away as a free download (nowadays, acquiring a copy requires a payment of about $60 to attain a single user license for personal use, which I think is a bit silly).

If you are using one of the FIRST German or Danish (and probablysome other non-US versions) of the OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) version ofWindows 95, there is an ERROR in the IO.SYS system file, which preventsHIMEM.SYS from loading in the HMA area, leading HIMEM.SYS to use 45 Kb ofconventional memory instead of 1 Kb.You can downloadthe IO2PATCH.EXE program here. This program fixes the problem. Justput the IO2PATCH.EXE file in the root of your bootup drive (usually C:\), where theIO.SYS system file is placed, execute the IO2PATCH program, and then the problem shouldbe fixed.

Optionally, the WFDB library may be compiled with support for reading input directly from web (HTTP) and FTP servers without the use of a web browser or an FTP client. This optional feature allows applications linked with the WFDB library to view or analyze data such as those available from PhysioNet without the need to download entire records and to store them locally. To enable this feature, you will also need the libcurl library. 2ff7e9595c
